This structural steel weldment was designed to support a 400,000 lb melter.
The solid model was created with Mechanical Desktop and then transferred
to Algor via InCAD. Numerous FEA runs were made to model different loads,
geometry, and boundary conditions. Reaction forces were calculated and fixed
displacement boundary elements were added to simulate rolling over small pieces
of debris. Deflections are sometimes exaggerated so the engineer can visually see
where and how the structure is flexing and if it is as expected. This can also
show part connectivity - or lack thereof. Color bars were removed to hide proprietary data.
